In deeply researched works, two accomplished local historians bring to light important buried histories about Long Islanders of color. Denice Evans-Sheppard, Executive Director of the Oyster Bay Historical Society, shares her book, Footsteps of a Forgotten Soldier, about her great-great-grandfather, David Carll, a resident of Oyster Bay who served in the Civil War. Author Claire Bellerjeau shares Remember Liss, about an enslaved Black woman from Oyster Bay in the 18th century whose life sheds light on the experiences of people of color in New York from the colonial period and the Revolutionary War into the early republic.
